TRANSFORMING AGRICULTURE THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS: TARDA & SIMLAW SEEDS COLLABORATION.
Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority team led by the Managing Director Mr. Liban Roba recently engaged Simlaw Seeds Company Ltd. Group led by Jane Gatumia to explore opportunities in contract farming, large-scale seed multiplication, and irrigation-driven agriculture—key pillars in boosting national food security.
- The key Outcomes from the Discussions were
Maize Seed Multiplication – A 10-acre pilot of Hybrid 614 maize will be established in Kiambere, focusing on high-yield, drought-resistant seed production for large-scale commercial farming. - Expanding Green Gram Production – A 50-acre pilot will integrate Simlaw’s expertise in seed breeding with TARDA’s land and irrigation resources, ensuring better yields and market linkages for farmers.
- Bridging the Technology Gap – Simlaw’s contract farming model connects growers with technical support, seed certification (KEPHIS), and market access, creating an inclusive agricultural value chain.
- Leveraging Irrigation for Resilience – To mitigate climate risks, irrigation farming will be prioritized, ensuring consistent yields and sustainable land use.
Strategic Impact:
- Reduced Dependence on Imports – Scaling up local seed production will help Kenya lower reliance on imported maize and pulses.
- Job Creation & Community Empowerment – Contract farming provides structured market opportunities for smallholder farmers.
- Alignment with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) – Supporting agribusiness growth, rural economies, and national food security.
This partnership underscores TARDA’s commitment to unlocking agricultural potential through innovation, investment, and collaboration. We’re keen on paving the way for a food-secure, climate-resilient future!
