HIGHLIGHTS FROM INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS 2026
Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority through the Athi Basin Regional Team participated in the International Day of Forests celebration convened by the Machakos County Government at Matetani, Kangundo Sub-County, under the theme “Forests and Economies.” The event was led by the County Chief Officer for Environment & Natural Resources Mr. Simeon Kitheka, alongside Kenya Forest Service County Forest Conservator, Madam Milcah Mutua, and graced by Miss Environment Kenya 2026, Regina Syombua, with strong participation from national and county stakeholders.
During the event,11,000 trees were planted across Matetani, Uuni, and Iveti Forests, part of this being fruit trees which are vital in strengthening food security as well as contributing to household income. The event, which focused on demonstrating how forests power local economies, saw TARDA showcase how forests directly support livelihoods through beekeeping whereby bees drive pollination and agricultural productivity with honey production creating a source of income for communities .Over 250 community members benefitted from training by TARDA staff on modern techniques of grafting and beekeeping as a way of equipping them with practical income generating skills.
In Embu, the Regional team joined hands with key stakeholders including the Kenya Forest Service, Nema Kenya, Rainforest Alliance Africa, KALRO, Embu County Government , University of Embu, local schools and CBOs in a true demonstration of collective climate action by planting 3,600 tree seedlings under the Lala Miti initiative—contributing to the national restoration efforts while strengthening local ecosystems.
The day focused on sensitizing communities on the importance of forest conservation—reinforcing the link between healthy forests, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental resilience with Community impact extended further with KALRO, NEMA and the National Cereals & Produce Board supporting participating schools with sanitary towels, foodstuffs and fruits, ensuring the day delivered both environmental and social value.
At Geta Secondary School Grounds, Kipipiri Constituency, the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority’s Njabini team joined the national celebrations of the #InternationalDayofForests, led by Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH, in a collective effort to restore the Aberdare catchment. A total of 1,500 trees were planted – a deliberate step towards protecting one of Kenya’s most critical water towers and securing the livelihoods that depend on it.In partnership with Kenya Wildlife Service Kenya Forest Service, Nyandarua County Government, CBOs, and the local community, the exercise reinforced a shared commitment to forest conservation and sustainable resource management.
The message for this day in all these events was clear: restoring our forests is not optional—it is essential for water security, climate resilience, and community well-being.
