TARDA JOINS LUKENYA UNIVERSITY IN THE 10 MILLION TREES MARATHON!
Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority joined Lukenya University and other stakeholders at the Lukenya University for the 3rd Edition of the 10 Million Trees Marathon, a bold initiative aimed at restoring ecosystems and combating climate change.
As part of this initiative, TARDA has committed to planting 50,000 assorted agro-forest trees along the Athi River riparian zones in the slopes of Yatta Plateau, covering Kibwezi East, Mtito Andei, and Makueni County. This partnership is further strengthened by the MOU signed in December 2024 by TARDA’s Athi Basin Region Team and Lukenya University, which aimed at promoting a greener future through tree planting and environmental sustainability and centered on planting and nurturing 50,000 trees as well as establishing a joint tree nursery in efforts aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change and enhancing biodiversity.
Key Milestones of the MOU so far actualized are:
- 40,000 tree seedlings already donated to Lukenya University
- Joint tree nursery establishment in progress
- Ongoing rehabilitation of Kathiani Catchment and Machakos tree nurseries
By reclaiming degraded lands, improving soil fertility as well as promoting sustainable afforestation.
TARDA is reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and biodiversity enhancement through impactful collaborations with like-minded stakeholders.
