Masinga Irrigation Project
The Masinga Irrigation Project was conceptualized as part of Masinga multipurpose dam. The total farm is approximately 12,000Ha out of which Masinga reservoir occupy about 9,000Ha. The first phase of the project Implementation was done in 1989.
Masinga irrigation project is situated in Embu County in Mbeere South Sub County. The project was started in 1989 as an irrigation project with 60Ha fully opened up for irrigation. The project did very well with various horticultural crops especially French beans.
In early 2005, the irrigation operations were stalled due to lack of water for irrigation. This was caused by Masinga dam low water levels that followed the subsequent years to date. The project has over 200Ha arable land that can be used for horticulture mainly characterized by black cotton soils.
In 2024 the farm planted 65 acres of sorhgum and it is intended to be doubled in acreage in the subsequent planting season.
There is also a plan to pilot Juncao grass, also known as “miracle grass,” is a high-yield hybrid grass developed in China and now used globally for livestock feed and soil erosion control.
