Masinga Multipurpose Reservoir
The scenic Masinga multipurpose reservoir commissioned in 1982 is situated 150 km from Nairobi via Nairobi – Thika – Kangonde – Embu highway about 70Km from Embu town.
The dam is the main reservoir in the cascade with a capacity of 1.56 billion cubic metres of water capable of generating 40MW. The reservoir is equipped with a natural spillway and an emergency spillway to mitigate against flooding and also used for water regulation throughout the year.
The dam reservoir is used by KenGen to generate power for the national grid.
Infrastructure Constructed during the development of Masinga reservoir include;
- 80Km of tar marked road from Kanyonyo to Embu.
- 12Km road from Kaewa to Masinga Dam Resort.
- Commercial airstrips of 1Km tarmac stretch at Masinga.
- A Police Station with Staff quarters at Masinga.
TARDA also opened up a Commercial Oriented Pilot Project for farming systems including crops and livestock activities namely; Masinga Irrigation Project.
The Authority also operates Masinga Dam Resort as a restaurant to enhance internal generation of funds.
